When it comes to whiskey making in the United States, Master Distillers Jimmy and son Eddie Russell are bourbon aristocracy. Jimmy started working at the Wild Turkey distillery at the age of nineteen – before man landed on the moon – and is the longest-tenured active master distiller anywhere in the world. Eddie followed in his father and grandfather’s footsteps achieving his own 40- year milestone in 2021. With over 100 years of mastery between them, these two ‘’Bourbon Hall of Fame’’ legends’ combined experience is unmatched.



With four decades of distilling experience under his belt, Master Distiller Eddie Russell may have finally met his legendary father’s exacting standards. A bourbon virtuoso in his own right, Eddie grew up learning the trade from the “Buddha of Bourbon” – Jimmy Russell – a man beloved for his charm, wry wit and trademark Southern hospitality.



The idea of marrying straight bourbon and rye whiskies was born over a decade ago when a crew member accidentally mixed a batch of young rye with a barrel of mature bourbon. Upon tasting the liquid, Eddie Russell realized he had something very special on his hands and the serendipitous mishap was quickly “Forgiven,” though never forgotten. Over a decade later, Eddie has leveraged his years of distillation experience to craft Master’s Keep Unforgotten, a high proof, extra-aged, non-chill filtered variation of the harmonious blend of straight bourbon and rye whiskies.

Wild Turkey whiskies are made from limestone-rich water from the Kentucky River, along with the highest quality rye and malted barley for complexity and depth, and 100% American-grown and non-GMO corn for balance of flavour. The spirit is distilled to a considerably lower proof than standard industry practice and the legal maximum of 80%. This means less water is added before barreling thus retaining more flavour. The whiskey ages in new American White Oak barrels with the deepest number 4 “Alligator” char for bolder flavours and deeper colour.

Master's Keep Unforgotten serves as a testimony to Eddie Russell's experience and the legacy of the Wild Turkey Distilling Co. as one of the few Kentucky distilleries that has remained dedicated to the art of making exceptional rye whiskey. Unforgotten is a magnificent marriage of 13-year-old bourbon and 8- & 9-year-old rye whiskies - some of the oldest rye ever released by Wild Turkey Distilling Co.

To perfect the liquid, the harmonized blend was finished in hand-selected rye casks for a secondary aging period in the pre-prohibition Rickhouse B – the favorite rickhouse of Eddie’s father, Master Distiller Jimmy Russell – and non-chill filtered. The result is an unexpected combination of fruit-forward aromas complimented by notes of caramel, and black peppercorn on the finish. The mature 13-year-old bourbon provides a backbone of caramel and oak, which is complemented by flavours of dried fruit, honey, black pepper and baking spice complexity from the 8- and 9-year-old ryes. The rye cask finishing imparts fresh fruit and green notes, offering something you don’t normally find with older bourbon or rye whiskies.

Wild Turkey "Master’s Keep Unforgotten” is to be served neat in a tasting glass to best appreciate its full character, depth and complexity. It is first nosed to allow the drinker to become acquainted with the aromas and to capture the personality of the liquid. Then it is tasted neat, with the first sip used to coat the mouth with the whiskey.

Serving

The process is to be repeated with the addition of a few drops of room temperature water via a straw or eye dropper to open the spirit and reveal the rich layers of bright fruit, sweet oak, and bold caramel. As the whiskey sits on the palate, notes of black peppercorn and baking spices come through on the finish.
